Dealing with ulcers caused by braces

When Braces Cause Ulcers

Braces are a great way to achieve a straighter smile. Unfortunately, they can sometimes cause discomfort, including ulcers. These painful spots develop when brackets and wires rub against the inside of your lips, cheeks, or tongue. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and manage them for a more comfortable orthodontic experience.

Why Do Braces Cause Ulcers?

Brackets and wires can create friction against soft tissues, irritating them and causing aphthous ulcers, also called canker sores. Some people are more prone to these than others. While most heal within 7-10 days, constant friction can cause new ulcers to develop before the old ones disappear. In rare cases, persistent ulcers may require attention from your orthodontist.

Preventing Ulcers from Braces

Fortunately, this problem does not last throughout your treatment. Eventually, your mouth will adapt to having brackets and won’t become irritated. However, you can do a few things to prevent ulcers from forming.

Place orthodontic wax over brackets or wires to create a smoother surface and barrier that protects your cheeks, lips, and tongue. This disposable and inexpensive material can be purchased at most major retailers, especially in the toothpaste aisle. However, we also have wax available to our patients.

How to Relieve Pain from Ulcers

If you develop an ulcer, apply orthodontic wax to the site. You can also try these remedies:

  • Salt Water Rinse – Gargle with warm salt water for one to two minutes up to five times daily to reduce inflammation and cleanse the sore.
  • Cold Compress or Ice – Holding ice near the sore can numb the area and ease pain.
  • Over-the-counter Pain Relievers – Medications like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort.
