Providing Dental Bone Grafts
A bone graft supports dental implants
A bone graft is an oral surgery procedure that may be required if your jawbone is not dense or thick enough.
You may need a bone graft if your bone density is insufficient to support a dental implant or another type of treatment. While bone grafts are most commonly needed for implant dentistry, they may also be required for certain types of periodontal therapy when bone has been lost due to gum disease. If your jawbone is not strong or thick enough to support a dental implant, our dentist may recommend a bone graft. After a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone begins to resorb, or deteriorate, at the site of the tooth extraction. This must be corrected before the dental implant is placed. Our oral maxillofacial surgeons may also recommend a bone graft after a break or fracture in the jaw, or prior to receiving dental implants. Performed either initially or alongside surgery, grafting can improve weaker areas of the jaw and help prevent future complications. Learn how our team can use bone grafts to repair damaged bone by scheduling an appointment with Empire Dental Group.

Bone Graft FAQs
A dental bone graft is a procedure that restores or increases bone volume in the jaw. It is often necessary for patients who have experienced bone loss due to tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma.
Bone grafts are typically recommended to provide a strong foundation for dental implants, support natural teeth, or restore facial structure. If you’ve experienced significant bone loss, a graft can improve oral function and aesthetics.
The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, ensuring you feel no pain. After the procedure, mild discomfort and swelling are common but can be managed with prescribed medication and proper aftercare.
Healing time depends on the size and type of graft. Most patients recover from initial discomfort within a week, but it can take several months for the graft to fully integrate with your natural bone.
In some cases, dental implants can be placed at the same time as the bone graft. However, many patients require a healing period of 3-6 months before implant placement to allow the graft to fully integrate with the jawbone. Dr. Grasso can review the care plan with you and determine when a dental implant can be placed.
