Our Experienced Endodontist Provides the Root Canal Retreatment
In some cases root canal retreatment may be necessary
Our team at Empire Dental Specialists does their best to ensure effective treatments, but sometimes complications arise. Our endodontist will carefully monitor patient health after treatment and may recommend a retreatment if an infection returns. If you are in need of a root canal retreatment, schedule an appointment with our dental specialist.
If your tooth has suffered from infection or disease in the past, you may have undergone root canal therapy. In some cases, however, the root canal treatment may not have completely solved the problem. After root canal therapy, your tooth may become infected and painful once again in a matter of months or even years. This may occur if your tooth did not heal properly after root canal therapy or if a new infection has taken root in your tooth. Your tooth may not heal as expected if complicated canal anatomy went undetected during the first treatment or if the crown or other restoration was not placed directly after the endodontic treatment. No matter the reason, if the tooth has again become infected and painful, our specialist may recommend root canal retreatment.
During root canal retreatment, which is sometimes called endodontic retreatment, our endodontist will reopen the tooth, remove the filling materials that were placed during the first treatment, and carefully examine the tooth. We pay special attention to new infection or additional canals that were not treated during your initial root canal therapy. We then remove the infection, clean and shape the canals, and place new filling material. Finally, the opening in the tooth is sealed with a temporary filling. After the tooth has healed, we will place a new crown or other restoration to protect the tooth. To learn more about root canal retreatment and to discover whether it is right for your smile, we encourage you to contact our friendly team by calling or visiting our office today.

Root Canal Retreatment FAQs
A root canal retreatment is a procedure to repair a failed root canal. If a previously treated tooth becomes infected or painful again, retreatment may be necessary.
A root canal can fail due to several factors, such as bacterial re-entry, cracks in the tooth, inadequate sealing, or new cavities developing around the treated area. These issues can compromise the success of the initial root canal procedure.
In many cases, a root canal retreatment can successfully save a tooth that has failed. However, the success rate may depend on the underlying cause of the problem.
To prevent a root canal retreatment, maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing regularly. Schedule regular dental checkups, avoid biting on hard objects, and protect your teeth from injuries. These steps can help ensure the long-term success of your root canal treatment.
