We Offer N2O Sedation
We take fear of the dental chair out of the equation
Do you ever feel nervous about visiting the dentist? Does your upcoming treatment make you feel anxious? If so, you may benefit from nitrous (N2O) sedation at our office. Also known as laughing gas, this sedation method works when you inhale through a nose mask during your treatment. As you breathe in the gas mixture, you will experience a relaxed, euphoric sensation. N2O can help you feel calm and at ease throughout your treatment. This sedation method is very safe; the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove your nose mask, and you can legally and safely drive yourself home after your appointment.
N2O sedation is a good option for any of our patients who suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. If you feel anxious because you are receiving a treatment you have not experienced before, or if you simply dislike the sounds and sights of the dental office, we may recommend this as an option to help you feel more relaxed. Be certain to discuss your concerns with our dentist and dental team before your visit so we can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment. We invite you to contact us today to learn more!
N2O FAQs
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," is a odorless gas that helps patients relax and reduce pain during dental procedures. It is administered by our skilled staff through a mask, mixed with oxygen, and inhaled to create a calming effect.
Nitrous oxide slows down the body’s response to stimuli, reducing anxiety and discomfort while keeping you conscious and able to communicate. It provides a mild euphoria and sometimes a floating or tingling sensation to provide comfort during your endodontic procedure.
- Reduces anxiety and fear for nervous patients.
- Minimizes discomfort and enhances pain management.
- Fast onset and recovery – effects wear off quickly after stopping the gas.
- Allows patients to remain awake and responsive during the procedure.
The effects typically begin within a few minutes of inhalation.
Once the gas is turned off, the effects wear off within 5–10 minutes as you breathe pure oxygen. Most of our endodontic patients feel normal right away.
Yes, since the effects wear off quickly, most patients can safely drive home after their appointment. However, your Empire endodontic team will confirm if you are fully alert before you leave.
Nitrous oxide may not be recommended for patients who:
- Are pregnant (especially in the first trimester)
- Have respiratory conditions such as COPD
- Have a history of substance abuse
- Have a severe phobia of masks or difficulty breathing through the nose
- Avoid eating a large meal before the procedure to minimize nausea.
- Wear comfortable clothing to help you relax.
- Inform your dentist of any medical conditions or medications you’re taking.
